Mountain bike Instructor Award Scheme

MIAS MTB

The award scheme is aimed at people who are interested in taking people out cycling on a variety of terrain, and also for individuals who are looking for some Continuous Personal Development   

We run the MIAS courses around the Forest of Dean & Monmouth area.
The courses on offer are:

MIAS Level 1 & 2 course

This is a two day course suitable for people interested in taking groups of people out cycling. The first day of the course is a general training day suitable for both Level One and Two. The course will cover the following subjects:

  • Group Management

  • Responsibilities of the Group Leader

  • Navigation

  • Access and Conservation

  • General Skills

  • Technical Skills

  • Personal Equipment

  • Group Equipment

  • Weather

  • Emergency repairs

The second day of the course is the assessment day,  you will be evaluated and after assessment the assessor will discuss with you which award Level you would be eligable for.

1. Level One - Basic Skills - allowing access into low-level terrain, with little potential hazards i.e country parks, canal towpaths and non-wilderness areas where help is almost immediately accessible.

2. Level Two - Intermediate Skills - allowing access into wild country, with the potential hazards that surround such terrain. For low level rides on Bridleways and trail centres below 600 metres and within 20 mins of rescue vehicle access.

Price: £240 per person.

Course Notes:

The course is Non Residential.

The price includes the MIAS registration fee and logbook 

Participants must provide their own bike, helmet, equipment etc.

Participants must hold (or be in the process of undertaking) a valid 2 day First Aid certificate

Refreshments are provided on day 1, however participants must provide their own food

Pre requisites: You will need to have previous biking experience and arrive for the training with the relevant equipment necessary for leading groups mountain biking.

 

MIAS Level 3 course

Level Three - Advanced Skills -  aimed at mtb leaders who wish to lead cyclists in challenging wild country terrain, above 600 metres and in remote locations. Additional awards such as ML are required to validate this level (see MIAS website for details). Excellent MTB skills and maintenance knowledge are pre-requistes 

Course times: ~09.30 - 16.00
